The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth system modelling community and one of the world’s leading institutions in this field. The DKRZ not only operates supercomputers of the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems, but also participates in numerous national and international projects aimed at improving the software and infrastructure for climate modelling. We are offering a part-time (up to 50%) position as
Science Communicator (all genders)
Can you explain complex topics in an accessible way, keep a cool head even at events, and have a knack for writing good LinkedIn posts? Then you might be a good fit for us.
For our public relations work, we are looking for a committed individual in the field of science communication who is keen to raise the DKRZ’s profile, convey our technical topics in an accessible way and work with us to further develop our communication strategy.
● Public relations with a focus on social media and the website You will manage and further develop our external communications – particularly on LinkedIn and our website. You will immerse yourself in the work at the DKRZ, develop content and explain the significance of our work to a wide audience.
● Support at major events and conferences Whether it’s a conference, a high-profile visit or an event: you’ll support the team with planning, preparation and execution. During a conference, you’ll explain our work at the booth. You’ll lend a hand when it matters – in terms of communication, organisation and, if necessary, in a practical capacity wherever help is needed.
● Guided tours for visitor groups You will explain the work of the DKRZ through direct interaction with visitor groups, guide them around our premises and explain to a wide range of audiences what we do and why it matters.
● Active development of our public relations work You will contribute your own ideas, challenge existing formats, develop new approaches and help to further expand our communication strategically and creatively.
● A degree in climate physics, computer science, journalism or a comparable relevant qualification
● Interest in climate research and technical topics in the field of high-performance computing
● Strong interest in science communication
● Excellent language skills in German and English
● Interest in programming and tools for creating websites
● Enjoy working in a team in an international environment
We offer you the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams and excellent links to national and international research networks. You will be part of the communications team at the DKRZ and will have creative freedom at the interface between applied computer science, climate research and science communication. Participation in international conferences and workshops will enable you both to further your professional development in the relevant fields and to present your own findings.
We are based in Hamburg, but we aim to create a suitable working environment through flexible working hours and location (remote working possible). Remuneration is in line with qualifications under the TVöD-Bund pay scale. Ideally, you will be able to start at short notice; the exact start date can be agreed individually. The position is initially part-time (50%) and limited to two years. A transition to a full-time, permanent position is possible.
Interested applicants are asked to compile a PDF document containing a cover letter, a detailed CV and any additional documents (e.g. professional references). Applications must be submitted via the portal https://dkrz.softgarden.io/de/vacancies. DKRZ 05_2026H
Application deadline: Open until the position is filled. Applications received by 17 May 2026 will be given priority.
Questions? Dr Florian Ziemen (ziemen@dkrz.de) and Dr Hendryk Bockelmann (bockelmann@dkrz.de) will be happy to answer them in advance.
